If you follow Lulu With Grace on Instagram, and you saw my Instastories, you know that my husband, Torrence, and I spent Thanksgiving in New York.  In addition to attending a couple of events, we spent some time revisiting some of our favorite places in the city, and exploring some new ones.  One of my favorite things to do in New York, especially this time of year, is to take a stroll through beautiful Central Park.  While visiting last week, we spent some time taking in the beauty of Central Park, and enjoying the amazing fields, forests, winding paths and foliage that the park boasts this time of year.

New York is one of my favorite cities to visit, and having visited there many times over the years, it has somewhat started to feel like home.  Visiting New York during the holiday’s is such a fun and magical time.  From the Thanksgiving Day parade to the lighting of the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree, which represents a world-wide symbol of the holidays in New York City, the holiday season is a great time to visit if you can handle the crowds and busy streets. There is truly so much to love about the city, and equally so much to do, that for some, it can sometimes feel overwhelming to plan a trip to visit, so today, I thought I would share a few NYC travel hacks that I picked up from research, articles and experience that might be helpful when planning a trip to New York.

5 NYC Travel Hacks You Need To Know:

Navigating Central Park – When visiting this 843 acre park, take some time to plan and map out the things you want to see.  Visit CentralPark.com, to view featured and upcoming events that you might like, and to also access their “map it” tool to find specific landmarks and Central Park attractions that may interest you.  Also, to avoid getting lost in the park, keep in mind that the first two or three digits of the number on each lamppost correspond with what cross street you’d be on if streets ran through the park. The last two digits specify which side of the park you’re on — even is east, odd is west.  This will help you navigate the park in less time than normal.

Seeing Shows On Broadway – If staggering ticket prices keep you from considering taking in a Broadway show, finding discount show tickets is not impossible.  For starters, check out the TKTS Booth in Times Square.  It is run by the Theatre Development Fund, and offers tickets to Broadway and Off Broadway shows for up to 50% off the printed price.  It is recommended to get there right at 5 p.m., just after box offices have released their available tickets for the night.  If you’re tech savvy, download TodayTix, an app that promises discounted tickets (up to half off) on popular performances. Once you make your purchase, a courier will hand deliver the tickets to you outside the theater, allowing you to skip the line at will call.

Checking Out NYC From New Heights – One of the things we love to do is to take in the city from the observation deck at the Empire State Building, or from the One World Observatory.  These breathtaking views start at around $32 for a standard adult ticket.  As an option, you can visit SixtyFive, a stunning lounge that looks out over the city from the 65th floor of 30 Rockefeller Plaza.  Not only will you get nearly the same view offered at Top of the Rock (Rockefeller Center’s observation deck), but you can do it with a drink in hand.

Getting Around The City – Traveling around the city can be somewhat easy, once you learn the tricks.  One of the cheapest and fastest modes of transportation around town is the Subway, so this may be the first form of transportation to consider.  Check out the Citymapper app, that can help you plan your journey by subway, bus, ferry, or Citi Bike with easy-to-follow routes and real-time information.  When you want to take a car, try one of the black car apps before hailing a Yellow Cab,  it’s often much cheaper.  If you decide to take a cab, here are a few tips…You can swipe your credit card at any time during the ride to finish the transaction more quickly at the end; drivers cannot refuse you service based on your destination, as long as it’s within the five boroughs, Westchester or Nassau Counties, or any New York airport; and don’t ever try getting a cab between 4-5 p.m., you won’t find one, it’s shift change.

Finding Free Activities – Here are just a few things you can do in New York without spending a dime.  You can tour the Brooklyn Brewery  on the weekend for free, check out great views of the Statue of Liberty from the Staten Island Ferry, see some beautiful artwork in the Chelsea Galleries, and if you’re into fashion like me, you can check out the The Museum at FIT.  Also, if you want to avoid spending a lot touring museums, be sure to check out the free hours offered at some museums, like the Museum of Modern Art from 4-8 p.m. on Fridays, Brooklyn Museum from 5-11 p.m. the first Saturday of every month, and the Museum of the Moving Image from 4-8 p.m. on Fridays.

I hope today’s post has given you a few ideas for making the most of a visit to New York.  For my casual look for strolling through Central Park, I paired my off white coat (old, similar here, here, here and here), with my striped bell sleeve sweatshirt, and my black step hem joggers (also, love these here).  I added my black fabric ankle boots (also, love these here), my black crossbody shoulder bag, my off white beret (also love this one here), and my black cashmere lined leather gloves as accessories.  You can shop the items or similar items in this post, by clicking the links above in “Outfit Details,” or by clicking the photos below in “Shop This Post”, or you can visit the Shop Fashion Page here.

    As always, thanks for reading!
