This time of year can be very tricky when planning what to wear.  For me, living in Texas, where the weather changes every five minutes, layering is key, and being able to layer pieces for a great overall look, starts with having the right items.  Layering clothing easily, starts with having a few basic pieces, and because I’m not one that gets into heavy layers, the steps for layering for me are fairly simple.  My personal layering strategy is to pair items that allow me to take off pieces, like a jacket or coat throughout the day, and remain comfortable and stylish.

Layering is great for staying warm during winter months, and it’s also perfect for styling looks when the weather is unpredictable, and you want to have flexibility in one outfit.  If you are looking for ways to style a layered look, or a heavier layered outfit, in today’s “Style Guide,” I’m sharing five tips for layering clothing like a pro.

Style Guide:  5 Tips For Layering Clothing Like A Pro

Start With Basic Pieces – A lightweight tee, top, or blouse in a solid neutral or stripe is a great starting point.

Add A Sweater Or Outer Wear Piece – If you are going for heavier layers, you can add a cardigan, or sweater over your first basic piece, and then your outerwear, or if you want a more simple layered look, you can simply add outer wear over a heavier tee or top for a look that can transition to a single item throughout the day.

Accessorize With A Belt – Adding a belt is the perfect way to limit bulkiness when layering.  You can simply belt your jacket or cardigan for a more streamlined look.

Choose A Chunky Sweater – If the weather does not call for outer wear, add a chunky sweater over a long sleeve top for a chic and stylish layered pairing.

Add Additional Accessories – Depending on the temperatures, you can add accessories like a scarf, wrap, or poncho.  These pieces are perfect for layering, because they can be easily removed as needed.

I hope today’s post has given you a few helpful tips for layering your looks.  For this look, I paired my Quilted Jacket with my Ribbed Tee (old; similar here, here and here), and my Velvet Wide Leg Pants (sold out, similar here, here, here and here).  I accessorized with my Suede Pointed Toe Booties (sold out, similar here, and also, love these here), my Gucci Bag (also, love this one here).  You can shop these items or similar items in the post, by clicking the photos below in “Shop This Post,” by clicking the links above in “Outfit Details,” or by visiting the “Shop Fashion” page here.
