If you’ve ever visited the “About” page on my blog, you’re probably familiar with my desire to sometimes go beyond fashion, beauty, and lifestyle topics, to also focus on community and a life filled with both substance and grace. Well, in today’s post, I have the opportunity to combine both fashion and community, and I am honored to have been offered the chance to team up with The Akola Project, to introduce you to their wonderful organization, and to share these beautiful earrings from their jewelry collection.
The word “Akola” means “She Works” in Bantu, and it is the perfect word to express the mission of this amazing organization. The Akola Project is a non profit jewelry enterprise that invests in women in extreme poverty in Uganda and Dallas to become agents of transformation in their families and communities. The impact and benefits of The Akola Project are numerous, as Akola trains and employs women in Uganda to make beads that go into every necklace. Akola women in Dallas earn a living wage of up to $15 an hour to hand-knot necklaces in silk, and Akola’s distribution center runs as a second chance job program for women who have criminal records, giving them a chance to enter the mainstream workforce. What’s even more special about Akola, is that 100% of their profits are reinvested into their social mission to transform families in poverty, and 100% of donations fund programs and brick and mortar projects to help women and their families, so you can see why I am so honored to share information about Akola, and to also wear these beautiful earrings that have both a meaning and purpose.
These lovely earrings that I am wearing today are the Onehope Paper Drop Earring. They feature tiny hand-rolled paper beads finished in a non-toxic varnish to give a stone like resemblance. One of 400 Akola empowered women hand-crafted this piece, and 100% of product sales are reinvested in the social mission to empower women globally. This and other Akola jewelry pieces are sold in every door at Neiman Marcus and beyond, as well as directly from the Akola website here. With graduation and wedding season approaching, these gorgeous jewelry pieces make perfect gift items, that you can be excited and proud to give, knowing that you have shared in helping to empower disadvantaged women.
I hope you have enjoyed learning about The Akola Project as much as I have enjoyed sharing this wonderful organization with you.
