I’m sure at some point, when cleaning and organizing your closet, you have had second thoughts about getting rid of a certain item, because that little voice in your head said “Don’t do it…It will be in style again one day.” Well, here’s a lesson in listening to your inner voice. In 2014, we saw the culotte trend take off as a revival of the goucho, and it looks like this retro silhouette is back in 2015, and probably here to stay. If you own a pair of culottes, this is definitely an item to bring out for spring, and/or if you are looking to add this item to your wardrobe, here are a few how-to’s for wearing the culotte.
1. If you don’t feel the culotte will flatter your figure, just think of this full silhouette as a midi skirt with a slight pant feel. If you are comfortable wearing an A-line skirt, you can certainly wear the culotte.
2. Pair the classic culotte with a blouse or tee tucked in to eliminate having an over abundance of fabric on the top and bottom. This will not only add a slimming effect, it will keep the proportions of the outfit simple.
3. Pair a high-waist pair of culottes (shown in this post), with a crop or shorter top , and a heel to elongate the bottom, and create a waist slimming look.
4. Start with a pair of culottes in a neutral shade like, blue (navy or baby blue), black, grey, or cream for easy pairing and styling.
Because spring has sprung, I was in somewhat of a pastel color mode, so I paired these baby blue high-waist culottes with an off-white shorter top, pink duster coat and heels. I love the flow of these culottes, they are so comfortable, and they give the appearance that I am wearing a full midi skirt. The top and the bottom are both so versatile, they can be worn from day to evening.
